Eight Off Solitaire

Eight Off Solitaire is a patient game of planning. All cards are face up in eight columns, and eight reserve cells hold the extra four cards. You move one card at a time: onto a card of the same suit one rank higher in a column, into an empty cell, or up to the foundations, which build each suit from Ace to King. With so much information visible, skilled players win most games. Play Eight Off Solitaire free online in your browser — no download or sign-up needed.

How to Play Eight Off Solitaire

Objective

Move all 52 cards onto the four foundations, each built from Ace up to King in one suit.

Starting a game

Eight columns of six face-up cards are dealt, and four cards sit in the eight reserve cells.

Rules

  • Only the bottom card of a column, or a card in a cell, can move.
  • In a column, a card goes on a card of the same suit that is one rank higher.
  • Any card may be moved to an empty column; any card from a column may go into an empty cell.
  • A card from a cell can go to a column or a foundation, but not to another cell.
  • Foundations are built up by suit, starting with the Ace.

Controls

  • Mouse or touch: click a bottom card or a cell card, then its destination
  • Mouse: double-click a card to send it to its foundation
  • Keyboard: A to foundations, U undo, H hint, N new game

Winning and losing

You win when all 52 cards are on the foundations. The game reports when no moves are left; undo takes moves back.

Tips and Strategies

  • Look at the whole table before moving: every card is visible.
  • Keep a few cells free; a full set of cells is the usual way to get stuck.
  • Empty a column early to get more room to move.
  • Do not build long runs on a card whose suit partner is buried underneath.
  • Send low cards to the foundations, but keep cards that are useful as bases for runs.

Luck plays a part in every game, so no strategy can guarantee a win.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is this not just luck?

All cards are face up from the start, so careful planning decides most games.

What can fill an empty column?

Any card. This version does not restrict empty columns to Kings.

Is every deal winnable?

Not necessarily, but most deals can be solved with careful play, and you can undo to explore.
