Reversi

Reversi is a game of capture and flipping on an eight-by-eight board. You place a disc so that it traps a straight line of enemy discs between your new disc and another one of yours, and every trapped disc turns to your colour. Corners and edges are precious, and the lead can change on the very last move. Choose from three computer levels, and play as Amber, who moves first, or as Indigo. Play Reversi free online in your browser — no download or sign-up needed.

Place a disc so that it traps a straight line of enemy discs between your new disc and another of yours: the trapped discs flip to your colour. Dots show where you can play. If you cannot move, you pass. When neither side can move, the side with more discs wins. Corners are very valuable.

How to Play Reversi

Objective

Finish with more discs of your colour than the computer.

Starting a game

Each side starts with two discs in the centre. Amber moves first, and legal squares are marked with dots.

Rules

  • You must place a disc so that it brackets at least one line of enemy discs, in any of the eight directions, between your new disc and another of your own.
  • All bracketed discs flip to your colour.
  • If you have no legal move you pass; if neither side can move the game ends.
  • The side with more discs when the game ends wins.

Controls

  • Mouse or touch: click or tap a highlighted square
  • Keyboard: N new game

Winning and losing

The player with more discs at the end wins. Equal counts are a draw.

Tips and Strategies

  • Corners can never be flipped, so they are very valuable.
  • Avoid the squares next to a corner unless you can take the corner back.
  • Early on, fewer discs and more choices are usually better than many discs.
  • Try to leave your opponent with few legal moves.
  • Use the hints at first, then turn them off as you improve.
