How to Play Snake Game

Objective

Eat as much food as possible without crashing.

Starting a game

Press Start, or press an arrow key, to begin. The snake starts with three segments, heading right.

Rules

Each food you eat gives one point and makes the snake one segment longer.
The snake cannot reverse into itself. Up to two direction changes are remembered, so quick turns are possible.
In Walls mode, touching the border ends the game. In Wrap-around mode the snake continues on the opposite side.
Hitting any part of your own body ends the game. Filling the entire board is a win.

Winning and losing

The game ends on a collision. Your score is compared with your best for the current mode.

Tips and Strategies

Stay away from the edges in Walls mode until you have to go there.
Make wide, planned loops rather than tight zig-zags.
Think two moves ahead so you do not trap yourself in a pocket.
When the snake is long, follow your tail around the board to keep space open.
Try Wrap-around mode to practise planning without walls.

Game Variations

Walls mode: touching the border ends the game, so you have to plan around the edges.
Wrap-around mode: the snake leaves one side of the board and appears on the opposite side, which removes the border as a danger.
