Cryptogram

Cryptogram hides a sentence behind a substitution code: every letter stands for one other letter, always the same one. Select a coded letter and guess what it is; every copy fills in together. Letter frequency, short words and common endings help you find the pattern. Choose easy, normal or hard, where easier puzzles give you some free letters. Check marks wrong guesses, and you can reveal single letters if you need help. Play Cryptogram free online in your browser — no download or sign-up needed.

How to Play Cryptogram

Objective

Work out the original sentence from the coded letters.

Starting a game

Pick a level. The coded sentence appears with a space under each letter for your guess.

Rules

  • Each coded letter always stands for the same real letter.
  • No letter stands for itself.
  • A real letter is used for only one coded letter; assigning it again moves it.
  • Given letters are fixed and cannot be changed.

Controls

  • Mouse or touch: select a coded letter, then use the letter keyboard
  • Keyboard: type a letter, Backspace clears, arrows move the selection
  • Keyboard: N new puzzle

Winning and losing

You win when every coded letter has the right guess. Hints are counted, so a solve without hints is a better result.

Tips and Strategies

  • Look for one-letter words: in English they are almost always A or I.
  • The most common letters in English are E, T, A, O, I and N: compare them with frequent coded letters.
  • Short words like THE, AND and FOR show up often.
  • Use the Check button now and then to catch a wrong assumption early.
  • Try a guess and see whether the words around it start to look real.
